Església de Sant Joan de Boí

Església de Sant Joan de Boí

Cultural heritage · Church

Cultural heritage · Monument

Once you pass the Coll de la Botella, and at an altitude of 2115 meters, we find a unique sculpture at the roadside called "Tempesta en una tassa de te". Built in 1991 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Caixa Andorrana de Seguretat Social, it is a work by the American artist Dennis Oppenheim. It is a magnificent 13-meter diameter aluminum sculpture that symbolizes the magic hidden among the forces of nature. The structure also inverts the logic of problems and highlights that within the large scale in which the sculpture is located, a large problem in a small context becomes a small problem within a larger context. It is worth a visit for the spectacular landscape. In summer, you can park right at the foot of the sculpture. In winter, the area is closed due to snow, and you must leave the vehicle in the parking area of the ski resort and take a short walk.

Church of Sant Climent de Pal

Church of Sant Climent de Pal

Cultural heritage · Church

Pal is one of the best-preserved rural villages in all of Andorra. Furthermore, it has been part of a special protection plan since 1997. In the center of the village stands the Romanesque church of Sant Climent, built between the 11th and 12th centuries, which still retains some of its original masonry. This building shows some interventions that took place after its construction. The plan is rectangular, and the original apse from the Romanesque period, likely semicircular, has not been preserved. Therefore, today we find a square-shaped apse that we would date to the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Access to the interior of the temple is via a porch built in the 20th century by Cèsar Martinell, which features a pointed arch decorated with serrated teeth. Inside, next to the apse, one can access the Romanesque Lombard bell tower with a square plan and three stories in height. The distinctive features of this bell tower include the double geminate windows on the third floor, which are atypical in smaller bell towers like this one and represent a unique element in the Andorran valleys. Inside the church, we find an original granite baptismal font. On the other side is a second font from the 12th century that, in this case, was used to store oil. Two other notable pieces are the polychrome wooden cross from the 12th century and the Baroque altarpiece of the apse, which was made in 1709 and dedicated to Saint Climent.

Església de Santa Eulàlia d’Erill la Vall

Església de Santa Eulàlia d’Erill la Vall

Cultural heritage · Church

The Church of Santa Eulàlia in Erill la Vall is one of the most refined Romanesque temples in the Boí Valley, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the centre of the town, the church fits naturally into the urban fabric and stands out for the elegance of its proportions and for one of the most slender and harmonious bell towers of the Pyrenean Romanesque. Built in the 11th–12th centuries, it has a basilical plan with three naves separated by columns and ending in semicircular apses. The construction is meticulous, with well-squared stone ashlars, and fully reflects the models of Lombard Romanesque. The six-storey bell tower rises with a very marked verticality, decorated with twin windows and friezes of arches that give it lightness and make it a dominant visual element of the town. Inside, the space is sober and balanced, designed for the liturgy and medieval community life. Although the original mural paintings are not preserved in situ, Santa Eulàlia is especially known for its relationship with the Descent from the Cross, an exceptional sculptural ensemble of Catalan Romanesque, now preserved in the National Art Museum of Catalonia. This fact reinforces the artistic value of the temple and helps to understand the cultural and religious importance that Erill la Vall had during the Middle Ages. The visit allows us to clearly understand the central role that these churches had within the community: spaces of worship, meeting and symbolic reference in a high mountain valley. Santa Eulàlia stands out for the harmony between architecture and environment, and is an essential stop to delve into the Romanesque of the Vall de Boí from a complete and contextualized perspective.

Poble de Boí

Poble de Boí

Town

Boí is one of the central towns of the Vall de Boí, located at the bottom of the valley, next to the Noguera de Tor river, and surrounded by meadows, forests and mountains that define the Pyrenean landscape of Alta Ribagorça. Its strategic location has historically made it a hub of passage and community life, and today it is a point of reference for discovering both the cultural heritage and the natural environment of the valley. The town preserves a traditional urban plan, with stone houses, llicorella roofs and quiet streets, which reflect the adaptation to mountain life. Its main heritage element is the Church of Sant Joan de Boí, one of the oldest and most unique Romanesque temples in the valley, integrated into the complex declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This building stands out for its sober architecture and for having preserved a valuable set of mural paintings, currently kept in museums, which allow us to understand the evolution of Romanesque art in the Pyrenees. Boí maintains a very direct relationship with traditional agricultural and livestock life, visible in the meadows surrounding the village and in the organization of the territory. This connection with the landscape makes the village an excellent starting point for hiking routes and gentle walks, as well as for itineraries that connect with other Romanesque villages in the valley. Currently, Boí is also an ideal base for active and cultural tourism. From the village there is easy access to the paths that lead to the Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, the Boí Taüll ski resort and the rest of the villages in the valley. This combination of heritage, nature and tranquility makes Boí a particularly attractive destination for those who want to discover the Boí Valley with a leisurely and authentic look.
